ISSICON 2019
Sports

Once we mellow down with our injuries and with time, we find that we no longer think wistfully about what we could do once, but think enthusiastically about the things we can do now. Opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in sports began more then 35 years ago, with purposes of primarily fitness and recreational in nature.Since then wheelchair sports movement has mushroomed in all directions such as adaptation of various types of sports for persons with disabilities, training techniques, formalized rules, range and sophistication of equipment, formation of recreational sports clubs and organizations.

The largest spurt of growth and development has occurred during the last decade - including integration of able - bodied with disabled athletes in local sporting events, extensive public awareness, interest and acceptance and increased media coverage.

Participation in sports and recreation activities for persons with disabilities is readily available both men and women as well as children. One can choose to participate at any level be it recreationally or competitively.

Safety and Fitness
The most important thing to remember at all times is safety - of the setting in which you are pursuing an activity, the actual method you are using to perform an activity, precaution against special injury such as blisters, abrasions, cuts, pressure sores etc. One should also regard the safety of fellow participant, officials as well as observers.

Whether you decide to pursue sports activities as a recreational outlet or to be competitive, the most important benefit will be improved physical and mental well - being. Participation in sports provides a pleasant way to carry one's exercise programme. The physical activity improves blood circulation and respiratory functions. One would drink more fluids helping in preventing kidney and bladder infections. One develops strong upper extremities and thus proficiency in handling the wheelchair. Physical fitness acquired makes one feel better about oneself and one's capabilities - thus a better frame of mind resulting in improved outlook on life. Other benefits would be increased opportunities to make friends at home and even abroad. Recreation goes a long way in fulfilling emotional, social and intellectual needs as well as physical ones.
