Spinal Cord Society of West Bengal is the official state chapter of Spinal Cord Society (India) which is again affiliated to ISCoS (International Spinal Cord Society).

This was started functioning since 5th November 2008 officially and was founded on 7th March 2008 at Medical Rehabilitation Center, TRA General Hospital, 7, Dr. Biresh Guha Street, Kolkata – 700017.

The purpose of the society is to activate services, scientific analysis and making more aware of particular subjects on which the society wishes to perform. The issues of spinal cord, its various diseases, the injury incidences and the rapidly changing management protocol has forced to forget that wrong idea of a condition “not to treat” or “nothing to do”. Starting from the very early phase of a disease of spinal cord or first few hours of SCI to a future disabled life, a scientific management protocol in a well equipped set up along with proper education, teachings and awareness of the patient, party and the society is very important. The Spinal Cord Society in West Bengal is a time – proved organizational venture for developing the whole science, inspiring doctors and people for their services, encouraging newer initiatives and scientific discussion and interaction to spread the modern updates of surgery, medicine and rehabilitation.

The basic initiative originated from Dr. M. M. Ghatak, who started discussion in New Delhi in 2006 with the legendaries of SCS Indian chapter like Dr. A. K. Mukherjee and Dr. H. S. Chhabra. Through series of meetings with some of the friends and senior colleagues (who extended their hands) it was formed in mid of 2008 with only 17 members. The specialist doctors attached here are gracefully paying their attention as far as possible after completing their hectic daily schedules.

1st meeting held on 07/03/08 at Medical Rehabilitation Center, TRA General Hospital, Kolkata – 700017.

In presence of Dr. S. N. Ghosh, Dr. M. M. Ghatak, Dr. G. G. Kar, Dr. Subhasish Deb and Dr. Amlan Mondal, the 1st meeting to form the Spinal Cord Society (West Begngal) has been successfully conducted under inspiration of Dr. A. K. Mukherjee, the Director General of Spinal Injury Center and President of Spinal Cord Society of India.

1st meeting at TRA General Hospital with Dr. A. K. Mukherjee in March 2008.

SCSWB has dedicated itself towards the upliftment of spine related medical services in the State and with this objective in the background, holding its first state conference CONCORD 2009 on 1st February, 2009. Multiple seminars and awareness programs has been organized and it has created its own identity and proved itself a potential platform for all doctors involved in scientific management programs of spine and spinal cord related disorders.

More than a lac of people is now counting their days, having been victimized by Spinal Cord trauma or disease presently. We, the doctors operate and treat them which is definitely better than an old concept “not to do anything”, but their vegetative lives are under darkness which we cannot enlighten even by the modern medical interventions. The poor rehabilitation concept and facilities has compounded the disability scenario.

It is continuously exerting the effort to organize more number of scientifically rich ‘SPINE DOCTORS’ to re-institute the modernized protocol and discussions of advanced updates of Spinal Cord Science.

The prime objectives of this society are to promote and improve the medical, surgical and rehabilitation treatment of Spinal Cord injuries and diseases, to facilitate group interactions and professional skills and to enhance scientific services to such patients. The society also concentrates on the preventive services to avoid industrial, household, road traffic injuries and increasing awareness on maintaining a healthy spinal life.
